ways to get inspiration as a mom

It is true that there are times you feel like shutting out from the world around you just to regain your sanity. You crave being alone in your personal space away from the noise and mess that sometimes comes with mothering young children. There is a deep longing for those alone moments where silence becomes your best companion.

I remember some years back after a very exhausting day, I was trying to catch a nap when I suddenly felt something tugging at my eyelids. The next voice I hear asks, ‘Mummy, are you sleeping? I opened my eyes staring helplessly at my then 4-year old son. But it is amazing how little children come into your world and change a lot of things.

In your journey as a mother, you will give sacrificially and love endlessly because this motherhood walk is in seasons. There will be seasons of growth, seasons of learning, seasons of teaching and seasons of impacting. But while on this walk, distractions will come, challenges will show up and you may even get to loose focus of what it really means to be a mother.

But then, you must be willing to find new ways to make your motherhood walk memorable and one of those ways is to read inspiring stories of mothers in the bible.

5 Inspiring Mothers in the Bible

The role of a mother cannot be downplayed in the life of her children. The bible is filled with stories of mothers who showed great faith, strength and courage in their time. Some of them took a stand for God and lived exemplary lives. Today, you too can learn from these inspiring mothers in the bible about how to trust God wholeheartedly and walk closely with him as you raise your children.

1. Jochabed – The Mother Who Protected Her Child

A man from the family of Levi married a Levite woman. The woman became pregnant and had a son. She saw there was something special about him and hid him. She hid him for three months. When she couldn’t hide him any longer she got a little basket-boat made of papyrus, waterproofed it with tar and pitch, and placed the child in it. Then she set it afloat in the reeds at the edge of the Nile.” Exodus 2:1-3 MSG

Jochabed showed courage during a time she could have lost her son. The king gave an order to kill all male children. But, this mother saw a great future for her son and went on to defy the king’s order. She hid her son and protected the destiny God had prepared for him.

2. Mary – The Mother Who Carried and Nurtured the Savior of the World

Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. Luke 1:38 NKJV

Mary was a young woman who yielded to God’s purpose for her life. She said YES to God and had the rare privilege of carrying the Savior of the world in her womb. She was a part of Jesus’s early years and was also present when he died on the cross.

3. Hannah – The Mother Who Kept Her Promise to God

“I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. Now I am giving him to the Lord , and he will belong to the Lord his whole life.” And they worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:27-28 NLT

Hannah was barren and mocked at by her husband’s other wife. Her heart was heavy and she needed to unburden before God. This mother poured out her heart in prayer to God so much that the priest thought she was drunk. She also made a promise to God that day. God heard and honored her request. This mother returned after a few years with her son Samuel to fulfill her promise to God.

4. Sarah – The Mother Who Waited on God for a Child

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” Genesis 21:6-7 ESV

Sarah is the mother of Isaac, a child she bore in old age. God had promised to give her a child but everything in her made that promise look impossible. But she learnt to wait patiently on God. She eventually got pregnant after many years of waiting and circumstances that defied natural human laws.

5. Eunice & Lois – Two Mothers who Passed on a Legacy of Faith

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” I Timothy 5:7 ESV

Eunice and Lois are the mother and grandmother whose faith in God was passed on from one generation to another. Their faith in God and how they lived a life that honored God was so evident that Apostle Paul had to call them out. That legacy of faith and a godly life was first passed on from Lois, the grandmother who passed it on to her daughter Eunice. The daughter Eunice in turn passed on that same legacy of faith to her son Timothy.

Today, you too can find inspiration from the stories of these mothers in the bible. However, there are still some ways you can get that inspiration you need to keep you going in your motherhood journey.

3 Quick Ways to Get Inspiration as a Mom

1. READ GOOD BOOKS

One good way to get inspiration as a mom is by reading to learn and nurture your spirit. Did you know that books have a way of calming a weary soul? A book will many times speak to a particular need or situation in your life. And as a mother, there are a variety of subjects you can read about to become a better mom. There are so many great parenting books and resources that you can learn from.

It is from Stormie Omartian’s book – The Power of a Praying Parent that I learnt how to pray through your child’s room. It is also from Gary Chapman’s book I got to know about the 5 love languages in detail.

So, to thrive as a mom you must make out time to read articles, books and resources to nourish your soul. Find good books, buy and read them. If you need clarity on some subjects as a mother, invest in books and resources and you will be glad you did.

2. LEARN FROM OTHER MOTHERS

I remember someone once shared the story of Susannah Wesley on her Facebook wall and I  dropped a comment because I had read that same story earlier.

It is a story I believe every mother should read. It tells us how one mother with many children was able to grow a deep relationship with God despite having a full and busy home. She devised a means to make out time for God and went on to raise children who made impact in their lifetime.

I also love reading stories about mothers of children doing great things in the world. I recall listening to Elon Musk’s mother describe her son’s huge appetite for reading as a child. In her words – ‘ Elon was a voracious reader.’ We can see how his quest for knowledge has brought him far and set him apart in his generation.

You can unlearn, learn and relearn from mothers around the world and be inspired to do more as a mother. Wisdom they say is profitable to direct and can daily order our steps as mothers.

3. LET YOUR CHILDREN INSPIRE YOU.

What do you see when you sit and watch your children play? What do you hear when they sit by your side to tell you stories about their day? What comes to your heart when you experience their well of knowledge even at a young age and you can see how much they can become and achieve?

You will always remember that moment when you held your newborn for the first time. Your love took a new turn and your heart opened up in a way that you have never known. Your deepest desire at that moment, was to always care for and protect your new born child.

Children are God’s gift to us as mothers. They are the masterpieces and influencers that will shape the world tomorrow. And did you know that the process that leads to who they become starts right there in your home.

The future and security you want for your children can motivate you to seek knowledge and create better opportunities for them.  And the words and voices of your children can become a daily reminder of those things that truly matter in life. Your children are the hope of the coming generation and with this awareness can come great inspiration for you as a mother.

In Conclusion

Let us remember that the place of prayer can never be neglected in your journey as a mom. It is in the place of prayer that you can get answers and clarity concerning different areas in the lives of your children. Sometimes in a season of fervent prayer, divine inspiration will show up and birth the extraordinary delivering to you heavenly ideas and strategies to guide and lead your children.

Yes. Reading is so important for us to grow and learn. Thank you so much Lieren for reading.

  2. This is so true, Ufuoma, Mom’s “will give sacrificially and love endlessly” and “there will be seasons of growth, seasons of learning, seasons of teaching and seasons of impacting.” And sometimes all the seasons are rolled into one! The two things that helped me as a Mom of little ones: reading good books or magazine articles; and having praise and worship music on in the kitchen when I cooked; both of these kept my heart in a good place to love freely and to serve many needy little people each day.

Yes. I totally agree with the part of playing worship songs. It helps to calm my tired body and soul many times. Thanks for reading.

  3. I’m so thankful for these ways to be inspired. I’m thankful for the good moms God put in my path for me to learn from and the good books He has led people to write. I’m thankful for God’s grace and His Word.

Books have really been helpful to me too. Thanks for reading.

  4. This is really inspiring.

I’m glad Jochebed was Number 1. She is celebrated as Moses’ mother – but she was really the mother who raised three children ALL used by God – a Deliverer (Moses), a Priest(Aaron) and a Prophetess (Miriam).
    She was a Phenomenal Mother!

    Fantastic post! Well done 🙂
