Day One: When You Have Nothing Left – Jesus Feeds 5,000 (Mark 6:30–44)

What do you do when you have nothing left? Even now, what you have staring right at you is an empty pantry, an empty bank account and no idea how the next rent will be paid.

A large crowd of men, women and children had spent the whole day listening to Jesus teach. Tired and hungry, his disciples suggest that he sends the people away, so that they can find something to eat. Obviously, there was nothing available at that moment to feed the people. Sounds familiar right?

When you have nothing left, there is always something that you have or is available to deliver the miraculous into your hands and life. Jesus immediately replied to his disciples – “you give them something to eat” (Mark 6:37) in a bid to turn their attention away from the problem and open their eyes to see solutions.

Aren’t we many times like the disciples of Jesus? We keep our focus on the problem rather than think up ideas and solutions in the midst of lack, want and emptiness. We see walls, limitations and impossibilities before us instead of possibilities and divine interventions. We look outwardly rather than look within and trust God for answers and solutions.

Jesus took it a step further – he said to his disciples, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see”. (Mark 6:38) When the disciples went, they found that five loaves and two fishes were available.

And Jesus took what was available, gave thanks to God, broke it and gave it to disciples to distribute to the crowd. A miracle happened. God multiplied what was available. Everyone ate, the bread and fish went round. God used what was available to meet their present need and left them with extra baskets.

When there is nothing left, remember that there might be something in you, around you and within your reach that God can use to change your story and transform your life.

Does your life feel empty right now? Do you feel like there is nothing left within or around you to meet your needs? Jesus fed 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread and two fishes. He simply said to his disciples – “Go and see”. Today, find your own loaves of bread and fishes, give God thanks for it and trust him for the miraculous.

  • Jesus saw solutions not problems. (How many loaves do you have?)
  • Jesus broke down the larger problem to smaller units to give a better view of what could be done. ( He directed that the people be seated in groups.)
  • Jesus took what was available and turned his focus to God.
  • Jesus took what he had in his hands and gave God thanks.
  • Jesus took a step of faith and trusted God for the outcome. (He broke the bread and fish, and handed it to his disciples to give to the people.)

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to see what is available and what I have in my hands that you can use to transform my life and change my story. Open my heart to see solutions and possibilities in the midst of empty. I ask that you use what is available in my life to unlock the door of miracles, hope and unending blessings in my life.

Faith Challenge: Ask God to open your eyes to see what he can use in your life to move you from just enough to more than enough. Give what you have — time, encouragement, generosity and trust Jesus to do the rest.
