A Prayer of Purity for Your Child

Purity according to Collins dictionary means this – the condition or quality of being pure; freedom from anything that debases, contaminates, pollutes. Another definition puts it this way – freedom from contamination or pollution. However, in the bible, purity is used to communicate holiness, wholeness and perfection. And one of the attributes of God is holiness.

Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Leviticus 19:2

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:15

“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? Exodus 15:11

Why is Purity Important to God

  1. Purity grants you access into knowing God’s desires, intentions and love.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8

  1. Purity gives you access into God’s Presence

Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. Psalm 24:3-4

  1. Purity helps build intimacy with God

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8

Today, your children live in a world that have several elements of contamination. There is so much that is set before their eyes and minds every single day. From how the media, film and entertainment industries promote nudity, sex, pornography and perversion. Even children’s books and movies are now subtly infused with sexual and impure content. The question now is, how can parents raise children who will embrace purity in today’s world.

Purity is also not limited to sexual or moral purity. And while sexual purity is important, Jesus in the beatitudes points us to ‘the purity of the heart’. I like how this article describes purity.

God wants us raising spiritually, morally and sexually pure children as parents. He has called us to a life of holiness and purity. And you have been set apart as a child of God and now belong to God. Your body is now the temple of God as a believer and if God can choose to live in you, then your purity is of great importance to God.

He has saved us and called us to a holy life — not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. 2 Timothy 1:10

You shall be holy to me, for I, the Lord, am holy and have set you apart from the nations, to be my own. Leviticus 20:26

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:19-22

What Does the Bible say about Purity?

Children need to be taught why they must possess their vessels with honor and the importance of choosing a life of purity. We should let them know that even though you have been saved by grace, you still have the responsibility of presenting your body and mind as a living sacrifice which is holy and acceptable to God.

One good example in the bible is a young man named Joseph, who found himself in a situation where sin could have prevailed. Rather, he said, how can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

He spoke these words when his master’s wife tried to lure him to bed. In this instance, Joseph chose to maintain purity and honor God by resisting Potiphar’s wife.

He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God? Genesis 39:9

Another example is a man named Daniel who chooses purity in his work for God. He refused to compromise his godly standards for the world’s standards.

But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore, he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. Daniel 1:8

How then can a young man keep his way pure in today’s world? Especially in a world where the enemy is busy with his agenda of contaminating and corrupting the minds of young children and teenagers.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. Psalm 119:9

This verse of scripture above gives us a clue. It says this purity can happen when you choose to guard your way and path according to the word of God. And for this reason, parents must never neglect the teaching of the word of God to their children, because living a life of purity starts with the word of God.

1. Purity in their Thoughts

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. Titus 1:15

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Romans 8:7

2. Purity in their Bodies

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Ephesians 5:3

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever wins sexually, sins against their own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 1 Corinthians 6:13

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. Ezekiel 36:25

3. Purity in their Words

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person. Matthew 15:11

Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 1 Peter 2:22

Then I will purify the lips of the peoples, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD and serve him shoulder to shoulder. Zephaniah 3:9

The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but gracious words are pure in his sight. Proverbs 15:26

4. Purity in What they See

Your eye is the lamp ofyour body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. Luke 11:34-35

I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin? Job 31:1

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. Luke 11:34

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:28

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Psalm 119:37

5. Purity in their Actions.

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51: 10

Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22

It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age. Titus 2:12

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Colossians 3:5

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
