A Prayer for Your Child’s Identity in Christ

The question ‘Who am I?’ remains a fundamental question that everyone must answer in life. And discovering who you are begins with knowing God who gave you life.

Your children are not left out of this journey of finding their identity in the world today. Young children are daily faced with a constant struggle of embracing who God calls them and the false identity the world has placed before them. Some of these children are looking for their identity in relationship status, grades, physical appearance, and talents. But the truth is that none of these things are constant.

For instance, your physical body may not always look the same as you grow older. What then happens to a young girl who defines her identity by her physical appearance and attributes.

God wants your child to see herself through his eyes. It is his utmost desire that your children embrace this truth – that they are made in the image and likeness of God. When your children can discover for themselves who they are in Christ, therein lies the foundation of a healthy self-image and confidence to face the world.

A Prayer for your child's Identity

What is our Identity as Children of God?

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:26-28

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13

I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. (2 Corinthians 6:18)

God created us in his image and likeness. Your identity and worth are connected to God himself. And even though that image was tarnished when Adam sinned, Christ came and died to redeem you back to God.

Now, when you accept Christ into your life and confess him as your Lord and savior, you immediately receive the right to be called a child of God.

The bible lets us know that we are now born of God and not of a man. God himself became your father when you accepted this invitation. And even when our earthly fathers fail, God is a true father that will never leave or abandon you.

How liberating it can be for your child to live in the reality and knowledge of who he is in Christ. For it is in God that you find out who you are and what you are living for. May we as parents not just teach our children about God, but also remember to show them what God says about them.

And the devil is on a mission to steal, kill and destroy destinies. Sadly, many children, tweens and teens today have become easy prey to the devil’s tricks and strategies. He always starts by luring them to embrace a false identity – one that is short of who God has created them to be.

You are not what the world thinks or the labels that have been put on you. You are a child of God and belong to him. Knowing this will help your child break free from every shame, pain, addiction, stronghold and lie that has been holding him/her captive.
