A new year always signifies new beginnings. It’s a new year and it is another opportunity to birth new dreams, grow spiritually and follow God’s purpose for your life. These powerful bible verses will help you kick off the new year with a focus on things that truly matter.
Are you starting off the new year with a tinge of discouragement and worry? Remember that God’s word is alive and powerful and can reignite hope and faith in your heart. And these powerful bible verses will offer just what you need to start off this new year right.
7 Powerful Bible Verses for The New Year
1. Abide in God
John 15: 4-5
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”
The start of a new year is a great time to reprioritize your relationship and time with God. Has your relationship with God been lukewarm? God is calling you this year to draw nearer. To abide in God means to live in, remain in and stay in God. When you abide in God, you will bear much fruit in your life. If you desire fruitfulness in every area of your life this year, give time to deepening your walk and relationship with God.
2. Trust in God
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Abraham trusted God’s promise for his life even when it looked like it would never happen. Are you in a situation in your life right now that feels impossible to come out from? God is asking you to trust him with your whole heart. Trust him with your past, present and future. Switch from trusting in your wisdom and learn to lean on God for understanding and direction. If you can trust in God as you walk through the year, he will make every path of your life straight and fruitful.
3. Be Thankful
Psalm 100: 4-5
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”
You can still be thankful for where you are right now in your life. It is true that the previous year came with a lot of challenges and tough moments. However, God admonishes us in his word to always give thanks in every situation.
Thanksgiving was evident throughout the life and ministry of Jesus. He gave thanks at the grave of his friend Lazarus who had died some days earlier. He gave God thanks just before feeding a multitude without food. He gave God thanks just before his arrest and crucifixion
This year, choose to come into God’s presence with a heart full of thanksgiving. Remember his faithfulness and maintain an attitude of gratitude every single day.
4. Speak the Word
Jeremiah 1:9
“Then the Lord stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.”
God’s word is alive and active and can accomplish that which it is sent to do. In the temptation of Jesus, the word of God is what Jesus spoke to confront every temptation Satan threw at him. God’s word is powerful and is able to save, deliver and heal. But you must learn to speak it forth.
The word of God says that the word is near you and even in your mouth. And in the scripture above, the Lord himself says, I have put my words in your mouth. What will you do with the word God speaks and reveals to you this year? Remember that there is power in the spoken word of God. Spend time this year speaking the word of God over your family, children, marriage, business and nation.
5. Let your Light Shine
Matthew 5: 14-16
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Darkness will always disappear once light is turned on in a dark room. Your presence in the world as a child of God should dispel every form of darkness around you. God says this – you are the light of the world. God wants your light to give light to everyone around you.
Will you let your light shine this year through your words, actions and life as a Christian? You are not just any form of light. You are God’s light in the world today, and he wants you to put this light on its stand (the platform, outreach and voice he has given you) and shine this year.
6. Choose Wisdom
James 3:17
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
The bible speaks about the wisdom of men and the wisdom of the world. It also describes the wisdom of man as earthly, unspiritual, demonic, full of envy and selfish ambition. This, as we can see is in great contrast to the wisdom that comes from God which is pure, peace-loving and considerate.
God’s word also describes the wisdom of this world as foolishness in the sight of God. Many have been led astray and destroyed because they chose the wisdom that the world gives. This year, choose to embrace God’s wisdom. Let the wisdom God gives guide your actions and decisions every single day this year.
How to grow in wisdom as a mother.
7. Walk in this Newness of Life
Romans 6:4
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
The old is gone and the new has come. You are no longer who you used to be by virtue of your union with Christ. God does not just want you to know him, he wants an intimate relationship with you. He wants you to embrace your rights and privileges as a child of God.
Make up your mind to walk in this newness of life this year. Get into the word and find out all that God has planned out for your life.

A Short Prayer for the New Year
Father, I thank you for the privilege of making it into a new year. Thank you for all that you did for me in the past year. I release this new year into your hands. I ask that you fill me with your wisdom and lead me on the right path every single day in this year.
Hold my hands and guide me into your divine plan and purpose this year. I pray for open ears and an open heart to receive understanding and counsel. I also ask that my faith in you will not waver this year. I pray for strength and courage to walk through any adversity of difficulty that may come my way.
Heavenly father, may I not be caught up in distractions that will abound in the world. Help me to always keep my gaze on you. And like Mary, may I find hope and comfort as I sit at your feet and spend time in your presence this year.
