How to Speak Life Over Your Body

What words have you spoken over your body lately – words of life or words that  are full of hurt, fear, pain and defeat? Do you often find yourself saying things like this, ‘I’m tired,’ ‘I feel weak,’, ‘This sickness will consume me’, ‘I dislike my voice’, or ‘I hate my arms’ – without even realizing the impact of your words? Today, let us take a look at how to speak life over your body.

Many times, these phrases may seem harmless, but with time, they grow deep roots and seeds of sickness, discouragement, a counterfeit identity and a wrong self-image are planted in your life. Imagine a woman telling herself this every single day – ‘I just hate how I look’. She will eventually embrace that lie and always struggle to accept her true identity in God. The words we speak are full of power. They kill or give life.

“Your words are so powerful that they will kill or give life, and a talkative person will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21 TPT

As Christian women, a lot of times, we focus on nurturing our spirits and souls, and neglect our bodies. We forget that a healthy body and whole mind is needed for the fulfillment of our assignment here on earth. Yet, God wants you to care about your body and treat it right. And this includes eating right, exercising and speaking life to your body. The bible says that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). How you treat your body matters. Also, how you speak to and about your body matters too.

God Cares about Your Body

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) says:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

Your body is a gift given to you by God. It does not only house your spirit; it is a vessel through which you will carry out God’s purpose and assignment for your life. Your body is also not a mistake. Neither is it an afterthought. God took his time to put you together. And that is why the Psalmist was able to declare these words – I am fearfully and wonderfully made. This work of God is  indeed wonderful.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.” – Psalm 139:14 NIV

“I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking. It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly you know me, Lord!”  – Psalm 139:14 TPT

God gave you a body to function with here on earth, but it is your duty to care for your body. What you do not take out time to care for will eventually be weak and broken. Do you often listen to the signs and triggers your body is giving? Are you overworking your body and now constantly drained and worn out? When last have you taken out time to rest your body?

But, beyond listening to and resting our bodies, we must also learn to appreciate and love our bodies. God gave you a beautiful body. The bible calls it a work of art and masterpiece. This is who you are – a marvelous work of God uniquely crafted by God. Let the words in 1 Corinthians 6:19 remind you about your body today and always.

  • It is a gift we have received from God
  • It is a sanctuary, sacred place where God dwells.
  • It does not belong to you, but belongs to God.
  • It was purchased with the precious blood of Christ.
  • It is worthy of honor, love, care and respect.
  • It is meant to bring glory to God.

So, when you speak negatively about your body – calling it ugly, sick, weak, broken, or unworthy, you’re speaking against something God created and called good. You are polluting God’s dwelling place (temple) when you say the wrong things about your body. Choose to speak life over your body even in moments of pain, sickness and discouragement.

The Power of Your Words

Your words have creative power. Your words can preserve your life. Your words are a reflection of the state of your heart. Your words can break and bring you to ruin. We need to become conscious of the words we speak every single day.

Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity – Prov 21:23

God spoke the world into existence. In the book of Genesis, God said and eventually saw what he was saying. Jesus himself said – the words that I speak are spirit and life – teaching us that our words have the power to bring about change in any situation. The words we speak carry weight in the realm of the spirit. You can’t just afford to speak careless words all the time.

Remember, with words, Jesus called forth Lazarus back to life, he spoke to a fig tree and it dried up, he spoke to the wind and waves and there was peace in a storm. He spoke a word and the sick were healed.

Today, this same principle can be applied to your own life. Your words are not empty as a child of God. They are full of life transforming power. When you choose to always declare God’s word over your body and health, you are aligning with truth and releasing his power into your life. Think about it today. What are you doing with your words?

Are you strengthening or weakening your body?

Are you building up or tearing down your self-image?

Are you loving who you are or embracing who you are not?

Are you inviting God’s healing power or aligning with fear and defeat?

Are you destroying God’s sanctuary or beautifying his dwelling place?
