Biblical Encouragement, Growing your faith

How My Trust in God Has Grown Deeper Over the Years

Have you ever been faced with a difficult challenge? Your faith has been tested to its limits and your trust in God is being questioned. Let me share with you how my trust in God has grown deeper over the years.

When Esther uttered these words – ‘If I perish, I perish’, it was a testament of her courage and faith in God. It spoke of her willingness to risk death to save her people from annihilation. It was a bold declaration of her faith and trust in God.

Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai,  “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”- Esther 4:15-16

There have been times in my life when I have had to stand firm in faith. I have believed in faith for answers in prayer. Sometimes, my answers came quicker than I even imagined. There were times when I had to wait patiently for God’s timing. But, I also had those times when my answer never came. Did I lose hope? Did I stop trusting? Did I feel like God had abandoned me?

When My Trust Was Shallow

In my early years of faith and spiritual journey, I thought trusting God meant simply saying, “Lord, I believe.” But over time, I have learned that real trust is more than believing, it is surrendering fully to God’s will, purpose and timing. It is learning to lean on God when you don’t see or understand what He is doing.

Life did not always go the way I expected. I had to learn to trust God with my life in different seasons and for my future. Sometimes, it was me being anxious, impatient or being afraid to let go of my fears. God was in the picture but was in the shadows. I knew him but had not fully embraced his fatherhood to trust him unafraid.

I trusted God for the little and big things. I had faith for good things and even the impossible. I desired to see God move quickly on my behalf. But did it always happen like I wanted or imagined. I remember holding hands in faith with my friend many years ago trusting God for her mother’s healing. We believed and prayed fervently. Her mother did not make it. My friend was broken, and I was left wondering if God heard our cries in prayer and chose not to answer and heal her.

As I look back at that time, I have learned that trusting God isn’t about knowing what comes next or how the story will end. It is about embracing the God who owns  your life and future, knowing that your life is in his hands and believing that his plans for you are always good.

When God Taught Me to Trust Through Life’s Seasons

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”Proverbs 3:5–6

These words are a favorite verse for many Christians today. It is one bible verse that points us to what happens when we quit leaning on our own understanding, and learn to trust God wholeheartedly. God promises to order our steps and make our paths straight when we learn to trust in him.

I have lived through challenging seasons with my family in my growing years, and trust was more of looking up to God and begging him to show up quickly on our behalf as a family.

I was once faced with an academic challenge, and trusting God moved from just believing for a miracle to standing firm in faith irrespective of the outcome.

As I waited in faith to conceive my second child, trusting God was more about quiet submission to his will and waiting patiently for my answer.

My motherhood journey is teaching me to trust in God wholeheartedly for the lives and future of my children. I am learning that trusting is aligning with God and leaning to him for wisdom as I parent my children.

When my husband decided to walk the entrepreneurial path to start his dental practice, trusting God was stepping out in faith on life’s waters. It was a knowing that even if you started to sink, God was close and will pull you out when you call on him.

I held on to this scripture many times in faith as we believed and trusted God for our lives and future as a family.

After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace [who imparts His blessing and favor], who called you to His own eternal glory in Christ, will Himself complete, confirm, strengthen, and establish you [making you what you ought to be. – 1 Peter 5:10 AMP

Each season of life has opened my eyes to see God in a different light. Every challenge has helped to shape my mind,  build my character and helped to keep my gaze on God. And I have learnt to see that every prayer not answered was God pointing me to the sovereignty of his will and purpose for my life. To trust God is to know and experience him in ways you never even knew. It is releasing control and embracing his timing in each season of life. And even though seasons will come and go, our trust in God as God’s children must remain constant.

How My Trust Looks Different Today

Today, my trust in God feels steadier, not because I have mastered faith, but because I have seen and experienced God’s faithfulness too many times to doubt him now. I have seen him move on my behalf even when my faith was sinking. I have felt his presence and comfort in my low and weary moments. And I know that God is always working behind the scenes in my life, fighting my unseen battles and leading me to victory.

So, whenever worry whispers, I remember how God carried me through my difficult seasons. When the future feels uncertain, I choose to believe that His plans for me are still good. When fear grips my heart, I hold on firmly to his word and promises. And when I don’t have all the answers, I rest knowing that God does, and that his faithfulness is forever.

Today, trusting God now looks like praying and holding on to his word instead of praying and worrying. It is more about surrendering to God’s leading, guidance and counsel. And I may not always understand his ways, but I have learnt to embrace his fatherhood and love for me.

Here is What I Have Learned About Trust

1. Trust Grows in Relationship

The more you walk with God, the more you know him through his word, the more you learn his heart and understand his leading. And the easier it becomes to trust Him.

2. Trust is Built in the Waiting Room

Waiting seasons will test you and push your faith to the limit. But also, learning to wait patiently on God builds endurance, refines your character and will deepen your faith in God.

3. Trust Brings Peace

True trust replaces fear and worry with quiet confidence, even when nothing makes sense. Knowing that God is in you and with you through every fire and storm fills your heart with a peace that God alone can give.

Some Bible Verses That Have Strengthened My Trust in God

  • When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. Psalm 56:3
  • Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. — Isaiah 40:31
  • And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.Romans 8:28
  • Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9
  • You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. – Isaiah 26:3
  • But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. Jeremiah 17:7
  • Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. — Psalm 55:22
  • For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. The LORD always keeps his promises; he is gracious in all he does — Psalm 145:13

  • My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. – Psalm 121:2-3

A Final Word of Encouragement

Dear Friend, if you are in a season where trusting God feels hard, I encourage you today to hold on. God is not asking you to have perfect faith, just a heart that is open to believe.

Let God walk with you through the unknown and lead you into a place of hope and purpose. Over time, you will look back and see how every trial, every waiting season, and every answered prayer was shaping a deeper trust in Him.

You are growing in faith and strengthened through every difficult season. Your character is refined in every waiting season. And your mind is renewed through the word as you press deeper to know more of your heavenly father. Today, I want you to remember that God is faithful, and He will never fail you. How has God been teaching you to trust him lately?”

A Short Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the way you have patiently taught me to trust you at all times. I pray that when my heart wavers, be quick to remind me of Your faithfulness towards me. Whenever I am afraid, surround me with your presence. And may I always rest in your goodness knowing that you are working it all out for my good, even when I cannot see it. Lord help me to surrender daily and rest in your unchanging love for me. Amen!
