Darkness cannot exist in the presence of light. When a single ray of light finds its way into a dark room, the atmosphere of that room will change instantly at the presence of light. Jesus is called the light of the world and it is this light that we carry within us as sons and daughters of God. This light shines brightly in the darkness, so much that no matter the degree or intensity of the darkness, it can never be put out. May this Advent season open your eyes to see and encounter the great light.
Week One: Chosen by God
Week Two: Waiting on the Lord’s Promises
Week Three: A Savior is Born
Advent Devotional Week Four: Light in the Darkness
Scripture: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. – Isaiah 9:2
Devotional Reflection:
The world we currently live in sometimes feels dark and gloomy. Global conflicts, wars, gun violence, hunger, world economic crisis, human struggles and challenges can make it look like we are living in a dark house. Isaiah’s prophecy speaks of a people walking in darkness who have seen a great light. It also says that a light has dawned on those living in the land of deep darkness. Jesus is the light that pierces through the darkness.
Advent reminds us of this profound truth – Jesus is the true light that gives light to all men. And whoever follows him will not walk in darkness or stumble through life in the dark. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”. – John 8:12
God sent his son Jesus as the ultimate light to illuminate our minds, hearts and life and to dispel the darkness of sin. As we reflect on the Advent season, let us remember to fix our eyes on the light of Christ. His light gives wisdom, direction, clarity and hope. No matter how dark life’s challenges may feel like right now, remember that Christ’s light cannot be extinguished.
This Christmas, may our eyes and heart be open to see and receive the light of Christ. May we not only receive Christ’s light, but also reflect it to others. In a world still plagued by darkness, may we embrace our call as carriers of light who offer hope, love, peace, compassion and kindness to those around us.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16
Application:
1. Reflect: Think about a time in your life when you experienced God’s light in a very dark situation. How did it strengthen your faith?
2. Action: In what ways can you reflect the light of Christ to others during this Advent season?
3. Encourage: How can you practically encourage someone walking through a dark season in life today?
Final Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being the light in the darkness. Shine brightly in our hearts and lives and drive out anything that keeps us from walking in your truth. Help us to walk in our calling as children of light who will continue to shine the good news of the gospel all around the world. Amen!
