5 Valuable Lessons from the Little Captive Maid in 2 Kings Chapter 5

Today, I am sharing 5 Valuable Lessons from the Little Captive Maid in 2 Kings Chapter 5.

The story of the little captive maid can be found in 2 Kings chapter 5 and revolves around Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army who was afflicted with leprosy.

During a Syrian raid into Israel, a young Israelite girl was captured and became a servant in Naaman’s household where she served Naaman’s wife.

It was in her place of service as a servant that she made a suggestion to Naaman’s wife about her husband’s condition. Her suggestion eventually led to Naaman’s healing and complete restoration.

She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” – ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭5:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In the verse above, we are introduced to the courageous and compassionate side of this young maid who refuses to let her current status stifle her faith in the power of God.

So, what can we learn from the little captive maid who was bold enough to share a solution to solve her master’s current predicament.

Here are 5 Valuable Lessons from the little captive Maid in 2 Kings Chapter 5

The story of Naaman and the little captive maid in 2 Kings Chapter 5 offers us several valuable lessons:

1. Little Acts can have Significant Impact

I bet this young girl never knew that her name would be mentioned somewhere in the bible. And that her story would continue to inspire boldness and faith in the lives of many several years down the line.

Despite her young age and seemingly insignificant position as a maid, her suggestion had a profound impact on her master, Naaman’s life forever.

A solution to her master’s predicament came into her heart based on her knowledge of the powerful things God had done through his prophet Elisha. And she voices it to the mistress of the house. Naaman followed this little girl’s counsel and got his miracle.

This emphasizes how even your small gestures, little deeds, words of wisdom spoken and counsel given can lead to significant change, blessing and impact in the lives of others.

2. A Steadfast Faith in God’s Power.

The little captive girl’s suggestion demonstrated her faith in the power of God through the prophet Elisha.

She was a captive in another city away from home and things that she was familiar with. This was enough to weaken her faith. But, her faith in God’s power remained steadfast despite her circumstances. She still believed in God’s ability to heal, and this guided her advice to Naaman.

Her words emphasizes the importance of trusting in God’s abilities and seeking divine help in challenging situations.

Will your faith in God’s power remain in difficult seasons?

3. Let Compassion Transcend your Circumstances

This maidservant, despite being a captive and far from home, showed compassion and concern for Naaman’s suffering. She could have looked away and showed no concern.

Her compassion towards her boss transcended her circumstances. She chose to be god-like in her character and offer kindness. She reminds us of the importance of empathy and goodwill towards others, even in difficult situations.

Jesus was compassionate towards others. His empathy towards the weak, sick and broken moved him to heal them and give them their miracles.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. – Hebrews 4:15

We have a compassionate God who tells us in his word to be kind and compassionate to one another. Let this compassion shine through irrespective of your circumstances.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. — Ephesians 4:32

4. Courage to Speak God’s Word

Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.Exodus 4:12

It is one thing to receive a word or counsel from God, it is another thing to have the courage to speak the truth of God’s word without fear. God gives instructions, ideas, solutions and answers from above on a daily basis, but it will take courage and faith to embrace and declare what he has spoken to you.

Imagine Moses before the red sea boldly declaring these words to God’s people. He had to find the courage to speak God’s counsel in faith.

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.Exodus 14:13

The little captive maid received a solution and gave a suggestion as to how her master’s leprosy could be cured. She was a mere servant who had no place with the rulers and elite around her. Yet, her counsel had within it the cure to a life-long problem. It took courage to speak out and she did not minding the outcome of her suggestion.

What counsel or word have you received from God? Will you courageously step out in faith and begin to declare it today?

5. Be a Blessing Wherever You are.

God always puts you in spaces and places where you can shine forth his light and radiate his glory. The problem is that sometimes, these places do not always look like what we imagined.

This young girl had everything working against her as a captive in another land, yet she chooses to embrace her season and make meaningful impact. We have no story of her grumbling, or being bitter and angry at her predicament. She did not have much to offer, however her simple one sentence suggestion led to one of the most unforgettable miracles in the old testament. Her master Naaman was healed of his leprosy.

So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. 2 Kings 5:14

She will always be remembered in that household for being a blessing to their lives. I recently saw a video on social media of a black nanny to a Lebanese family’s children who was returning to her country. These little children alongside their parents were in tears at the airport, as the children held on firmly to this nanny. It was such an emotional moment that transcended race, religion or the color of their skin. It was evident that this nanny had been a blessing in the lives of that Lebanese family and had made remarkable impact in the lives of those children.

Today, God is calling you to be a blessing wherever you are or in whatever capacity you are called to serve. Let your impact be one that will be remembered for ages to come.

Conclusion

Overall, the lessons from Naaman’s maidservant highlights the power of compassion, a steadfast faith in God, making significant impact wherever we are and bringing about positive change in the life of others through our actions and words.
