Are you walking through a difficult season in your life right now? It feels like you are up against a wall. Nothing seems to be working anymore. The odds are against you and the answer you seek is nowhere to be found. Here are 5 Comforting Scriptures to Pray in Difficult Times.
But first, let us take a look at a man named Hezekiah in the bible who found himself in a difficult season of life. The Bible says that he became ill to the point of death. This disease was ravaging his body and the verdict to him was – set your affairs in order for you will surely die.
It must have been a very difficult moment in his life. Death was staring him in the face and he had nowhere else to run to but God. The death of his dreams, visions and an end to his life. But what can you do in times of difficulty and helplessness?
What to do in Difficult and Trying Times
About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message: “This is what the Lord says: Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness. – 2 Kings 20:1 NLT
How does a man respond to a word spoken that seems to have sealed the fate? He was asked to go and put his house in order because he was going to die. In other words, go home and do those things that need to be done quickly because you don’t have much time here.
Have you ever been in a situation where it looked like the end was here? Perhaps the diagnosis is not looking good at all. Or maybe a divorce is staring you in the face after all these years. And you just can’t seem to make sense of why your marriage has to come to an end.
The truth about life is that there will always be difficult and trying times. There will be seasons when our faith in God will be tested. Yet, in the midst of it all we must always find ways to stand firm in those difficult times. Let us a take a look at what Hezekiah did in his difficult season .
Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying, “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. – 2 Kings 20:2-3 NKJV
Hezekiah turned away from his problems, fears, anxieties, helplessness and prayed to God. He shut his eyes from the negative report brought before him and turned his focus to God. Whenever it looks like you have gotten to a crossroad in life – remember that God can be found in the intersections, curves and detours of our journey.
This king who was at a major crossroad in his life turned his attention to the one who gave him life. He did not run to seek answers from men. He could easily have grabbed the prophet and begged for mercy. But in his moment of difficulty, he ran to God and poured out his heart before him.
And as he prayed and spoke his heart to God, the tears began to flow and he wept. Even in times of difficulty, God wants you to come before him. He wants you to come confidently before the throne of grace and ask for mercy concerning that challenge. The Bible says this-
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book” – Psalm 56:8
David was going through a difficult time when he wrote this Psalm. Today, it is a reminder to us that God is fully aware of our pain and struggles. And that he will not forget or abandon you. Remember that God wants you to come before him in your weakest, messy and most vulnerable state. He wants to comfort you and surround you with his presence. Today, take your attention away from the noise, pain, hurt and keep your gaze on God.
